MORE FROM YOUR DENIM.

A small repair kit. A longer life for your jeans.

Thread, a suitable needle and a patch: start with the tools for the problem you actually have.

A denim patch and sewing thread on a light surface

You do not need a drawer full of sewing equipment to deal with a loose thread or plan a small repair. Start by looking at the fabric around the damage. A neat hole in strong cloth is a different job from a whole area that has worn thin.

A useful starting kit

  • A hand-sewing needle suitable for the fabric thickness.
  • Thread chosen for the repair, plus a small pair of sharp scissors.
  • A patch with a weight and feel compatible with the denim.
  • A thimble and a secure container for needles.

You may already own most of this. Buy for a particular repair rather than collecting tools you have no use for.

Check the patch before attaching it

Consider how it will feel against your skin and how visible you want it to be. Test the placement from both sides. For an iron-on patch, check both the patch instructions and the jeans’ care label before applying heat. Do not assume the adhesive is suitable for every finish or stretch fabric.

Know when to hand it over

A broken zip, riveted button, thick seam or worn crotch may be better assessed by a repair professional. Do not force a needle through a stack of heavy denim. Ask about reinforcement if the surrounding cloth is thinning.

Store it safely

Keep needles and scissors closed away from children. Remove every temporary pin before wearing or washing the jeans.
