Straight-leg jeans are a useful starting point because the silhouette leaves room to change the rest of the outfit. Use what you already own and adjust the proportions before adding more clothes.

The everyday combination

Start with a plain T-shirt and trainers. Try a small front tuck if the top hides the waistband and makes the outfit feel shapeless. Let the hem meet the shoe without a large stack of fabric. If the jeans are too long, a small cuff is a quick experiment before committing to an alteration.

A cleaner evening look

Switch the T-shirt for a shirt or fine knit. Dark shoes and a simple belt can make the same jeans feel more considered. Check the length again: a hem that works with bulky trainers can bunch over a slimmer shoe.

A relaxed layered outfit

Add an overshirt or jacket over a close-fitting base layer. If the jeans have more volume, try a slightly shorter outer layer to keep the waistline visible. There is no required gender or body type for these combinations; the useful test is whether the proportions feel right to you.

Change one thing at a time

Before deciding an outfit does not work, try a different shoe, tuck or sleeve length. Small changes are easier to evaluate than replacing everything at once.
