Mark the change before making it.
A small piece of tailor’s chalk helps you plan a hem or repair. Test it on a hidden area first.

Before changing a hem or placing a patch, it helps to make a temporary mark. Tailor’s chalk gives you a visible reference without committing to a cut.
Test a hidden area first
Not every marking product suits every fabric or finish. Follow the chalk instructions and test both the mark and its removal somewhere hidden. Do not assume that every colour will brush or wash out.
Mark lightly
Work on a flat surface and use a light touch. A short, clear mark is easier to follow than a thick line. Check the position while wearing the shoes you plan to wear with the jeans.
Check before cutting
A chalk mark is a planning aid, not a finished measurement. Check both legs and allow for the intended hem construction. If you are unsure, take the jeans to a tailor and explain the length you want before any fabric is cut.
Keep it separate
Store chalk in a small container so it does not rub onto clothes or break in your sewing kit. Remove temporary marks according to the product instructions before pressing or finishing the alteration.
